The Biltmore House has 250 rooms across about 175,000 square feet and is still the largest privately owned house in the United States. George Vanderbilt built it between 1889 and 1895, it has remained in the family ever since, and it pays for itself — the estate is a working business with a winery, a hotel and a farm rather than an endowed museum.
The more consequential part is the land. Vanderbilt hired Frederick Law Olmsted, who had designed Central Park, and Olmsted looked at the exhausted farmland Vanderbilt had bought and told him to plant a forest. The result was the first managed forest in America, run by Gifford Pinchot and then Carl Schenck, whose forestry school on the estate trained the men who went on to staff the US Forest Service. American conservation as a profession starts on this ground.
An honest note before you book
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene brought catastrophic flooding to western North Carolina. Asheville's River Arts District was largely destroyed, the municipal water system failed for weeks, roads and sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway were washed out, and the death toll across the region was severe.
The city has reopened and is actively asking visitors to come back, because tourism is the economy. But recovery is uneven, some businesses did not reopen, and parts of the Parkway and the surrounding roads may still be closed. Check current conditions for anything specific you are planning, and be aware that the place you are visiting went through something recent and serious.
The city and the ridge
Downtown Asheville is a compact grid of art deco buildings that survived because the city was so deeply in debt after 1929 that it could not afford to demolish anything for fifty years.
The Biltmore Estate, south, covers about 3,200 hectares with the house, the gardens, a village and two hotels.
The Blue Ridge Parkway runs 469 miles from Virginia to the Smokies and carries no commercial traffic by design — no lorries, no billboards, no through-route function. It was built as a scenic road and nothing else, which is why driving it feels different from any other American highway.
The Great Smoky Mountains, an hour southwest, are the most visited national park in the United States.
The eight below are grouped that way.

The cabin rentals across the mountains around Asheville are excluded, and they are how a great many visitors stay. They are houses rather than hotels.
What to do
Do Biltmore properly — house, gardens and the farm — and allow most of a day. Book timed entry ahead.
Drive a section of the Parkway, checking current closures first. The stretch south toward Mount Pisgah and the Craggy Gardens section north are the two to prioritise.
Support what reopened. The River Arts District was hit hardest and artists have been relocating and rebuilding; buying something there is more useful than most gestures.
Walk in the Smokies or on Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi at 2,037 metres, an hour northeast.
Drink. Asheville has one of the highest concentrations of breweries per head in the country and the scene long predates the current wave.
Practical notes
Asheville has a regional airport; Charlotte is two hours by road and has more flights.
Autumn is the peak, with leaf colour running roughly early to late October at varying elevations, and rooms book far ahead. Spring is green and quieter. Summer is warm and humid at the city's 650 metres.
Check Parkway and road status before travelling. Sections have remained closed for extended periods since 2024.
