The first thing to understand about Los Cabos is that most of its coastline is not for swimming. This is not a matter of preference or caution. The Pacific side, where several of the most photographed resorts sit, has a shore break that drops onto sand and a rip that runs hard offshore, and the beaches there fly red or black flags most of the year. People drown at the southern tip of Baja with grim regularity, and almost all of them are visitors who assumed a beautiful beach was a usable one.
The resorts on those stretches are not being dishonest. They build extraordinary pools precisely because the ocean in front of them is scenery rather than recreation. But if your picture of a week here involves walking into the sea, you need to know that only a handful of beaches allow it, and to book accordingly.
Why so little of this coast swims
Cabo sits where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez around a rock headland. West of the arch the water is open Pacific: cold, deep close in, and heavy. East of it, along the corridor running twenty miles up to San Jose del Cabo, the coast faces southeast into the Sea of Cortez, which is calmer but still exposed on most of its length.
Swimming happens in the exceptions, which are the places where a rock point or a bay curve blocks the swell. There are four that matter: Santa Maria and Chileno, two horseshoe bays on the corridor with reef at the edges; Palmilla, sheltered behind its point; and Medano, the long beach inside Cabo San Lucas bay itself. Everything below sits on one of them.
The protected bays
Two horseshoe coves on the corridor, both with rock and reef at the edges, both genuinely calm, both with snorkelling straight off the sand. These are the best swimming in Los Cabos and it is not close.
Montage Los Cabos sits above Santa Maria Bay, a near-perfect crescent with reef along both arms, and the beach is a designated marine area with fish life you can see from waist depth. The architecture steps down the hillside so nearly every room faces the water. Ask for a room in the lower buildings if the walk matters to you, because the upper ones involve a shuttle. The tradeoff is that this is a large property and the beach, being public as all Mexican beaches are, gets day visitors by boat.

Reef on both arms of a protected crescent bay
Check availabilityChileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Collection occupies Chileno Bay, the other protected cove, and it is the better snorkelling of the two: the reef is closer in and the water is clearer more often. The resort is smaller and more contemporary than its neighbour, with a two-level pool arrangement that gets you an adults-only option. Request an ocean-front room rather than an ocean-view one; the difference here is a walk versus a step. It is the single best combination of swimming and comfort in the region.

One&Only Palmilla sits behind Palmilla Point on one of the few corridor beaches that is calm enough to swim on most days, and it remains the most polished operation in Baja. Every room comes with a butler, which sounds absurd and turns out to be the thing guests talk about afterwards. The beach is small and the water is protected rather than glassy. Ask for a room on the ocean side of the property rather than the golf side, which is quieter but faces inland.

Medano runs along the inside of Cabo San Lucas bay, protected by the headland, and it is the only genuinely calm beach you can walk to from a town. It is also busy, loud, lined with beach clubs, and full of vendors. That is either the appeal or the problem.
ME by Meliá Cabo - Adults Only sits on the best section of Medano with the marina and the arch visible from the pool, and it is the adult-leaning option on the beach. The rooms are dated relative to the corridor resorts and the location is the entire argument: you can swim, then walk to dinner, which no corridor property allows. Ask for an upper floor away from the beach club sound system.

The Pedregal headland and the Pacific-facing resorts south of it are excluded deliberately, and some of them are among the most beautiful hotels in Mexico. Their ocean does not swim. If you want that architecture and that view and you are content with a pool, book them knowingly. This article is about the other thing.
What to do besides the beach
Go out on the water. The arch and the sea lion colony at Land's End take an hour by panga from the marina and are worth doing early. Between December and April the grey and humpback whales come through, and it is one of the more reliable whale encounters anywhere.
San Jose del Cabo, at the northern end of the corridor, is the actual town: a colonial square, a church, and an art district that opens its galleries on Thursday evenings in season. It is a different place from Cabo San Lucas and worth an evening.
For fishing, this is one of the great marlin coasts, and the boats leave from both marinas. For a day away from all of it, Todos Santos is an hour up the Pacific side and has the food that Cabo generally does not.
Practical notes
Los Cabos airport sits near San Jose, around 20 minutes to the corridor resorts and 40 to Cabo San Lucas. Pre-book a transfer; the arrivals hall timeshare pitch is aggressive and hard to refuse politely.
November to May is the season, with perfect weather and the highest prices. September and October are hurricane months and genuinely risky. June through August is hot but the water is at its warmest and the rates drop sharply. Tipping follows US convention. Tap water is not for drinking.

Can you really not swim at most Cabo resorts?
Correct on the Pacific side and on much of the open corridor. Always check the flag, and take a black flag literally. Resorts on the bays above are the exception rather than the norm.
Corridor or Cabo San Lucas?
Corridor for the better beaches and the quiet. Cabo San Lucas for being able to walk to dinner and nightlife. The corridor requires a taxi for everything, which adds up quickly.
Is it worth renting a car?
Yes if you are on the corridor and plan to visit San Jose, Todos Santos and different beaches. No if you are on Medano, where everything is walkable.
When is the water warmest?
August through October, around 29 degrees. In January it drops to about 21, which is swimmable but brisk, and the air is perfect.
