13 Bangkok Hotels With Their Own River Pier, So You Never Sit in the Traffic

Bangkok traffic is not a complaint, it is a planning constraint. A five-kilometre journey at six in the evening can take fifty minutes, and the two things visitors most want to see, the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, sit in the old city where the Skytrain does not go.

The city's answer predates the roads. The Chao Phraya is still a working transport artery, with express boats running up and down it all day, cross-river ferries every few minutes, and free hotel shuttle boats connecting the riverside properties to the Skytrain interchange at Saphan Taksin. On the water, the old city is fifteen minutes from the riverside hotels. On the road at the wrong hour, it is an hour.

Why a hotel pier is the whole difference

A riverside hotel with its own jetty gives you a boat that leaves from the property. You walk out of the lobby, step onto a shuttle, and you are at the Skytrain, at the temples, or at a restaurant on the far bank, without ever touching a road.

That changes what a day looks like. Visitors staying in Sukhumvit, which is where most of the big hotels are, spend a meaningful part of every day in a taxi, and most of them see the Grand Palace once and never return to the old city.

The other advantage is the room itself. The river is wide, so a river-facing room in Bangkok gets an open view, moving boats and an actual horizon, which nothing in the interior of the city offers.

The old riverside, around the Oriental pier

The historic stretch on the eastern bank, closest to the Skytrain link and to the restaurants of Charoen Krung.

The Peninsula Bangkok sits on the opposite bank in a stepped building where every room faces the river, with the largest hotel pool on the water and a private boat every ten minutes. The all-river-view design is the whole point.

Capella Bangkok occupies a low-rise site on the eastern bank with a river-length pool, exceptional food and the most contemporary luxury in the city.

Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River sits beside it in a building of interconnected pavilions with an art programme, four restaurants and a garden running to the water. It is the most design-led hotel in Bangkok.

The Siam is a converted 1920s riverside estate with its own museum, twenty-eight suites and a private pier. It is the most unusual place to stay in the city and the least like a hotel.

Shangri-La Bangkok occupies a tower on the eastern bank with a very good spa, several restaurants and the most reliable large-hotel operation on the river.

Upriver and the northern stretch

Toward the old city, quieter, further from the Skytrain and closer to the temples.

Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort sits on eleven acres of riverside gardens with two pools, a spa village and the most resort-like grounds in the city. It suits families and longer stays.

Avani Plus Riverside Bangkok Hotel is the sister property beside it, more contemporary and considerably cheaper, sharing the same gardens and boats.

Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok occupies a small building in the old city almost adjacent to Wat Arun, with a rooftop restaurant looking straight at the temple across the water. It is the closest hotel to the historic sites and the smallest on this list.

Riva Surya Bangkok sits on the Phra Athit stretch near Khao San with a rooftop pool and river rooms, and it is the best value in the old city.

The southern stretch

Downriver, further from the temples and closer to the modern city, with lower rates.

Millennium Hilton Bangkok occupies a tower on the western bank with a rooftop bar that is among the best views in Bangkok and its own pier.

Chatrium Grand Bangkok sits on the eastern bank with large rooms, several pools and a straightforward family operation.

Hotel Royal Bangkok is the long-standing riverside hotel beside the Skytrain link, with the shortest walk to public transport of any property here.

What we have left off

The Sukhumvit and Siam hotels are excluded, and they include several of the best rooms in the city and all of the best shopping. They are also on the wrong side of the traffic from the old city, which means every temple morning starts with a negotiation.

What to do on the water

Take the orange-flag express boat rather than the tourist boat: it is a fraction of the price, it is what commuters use, and it stops everywhere useful.

Do the Grand Palace at opening, dress correctly, then walk to Wat Pho for the reclining Buddha and a massage at the school there. Cross to Wat Arun on the two-baht ferry.

Eat everywhere. Bangkok's street food is among the best in the world and the Michelin guide now covers it. Chinatown on Yaowarat Road after dark is the single best eating in the city.

Go to a rooftop bar once, and go to the Jim Thompson House, which is a teak compound in the middle of the city and takes an hour.

Practical notes

Suvarnabhumi is 45 minutes to an hour from the river. Don Mueang serves low-cost carriers and is further. The Airport Rail Link connects to the Skytrain, which connects to the river shuttle at Saphan Taksin.

November to February is cool and dry and the best window. March to May is very hot. June to October is the rainy season, which usually means a heavy afternoon hour rather than a lost day.

Dress modestly for temples: covered shoulders and knees, for everyone.

Riverside for the temples, the views and the boats. Sukhumvit for shopping, nightlife and the Skytrain. For a first visit the river wins comfortably.

Are the hotel shuttle boats free?

At the major riverside hotels, yes, and they run frequently to the Skytrain pier. Confirm the timetable, since the last boat is usually around midnight.

How many nights?

Four. Three for the city and a fourth if you are adding Ayutthaya, which is an hour and a half upriver or by train.

Is the express boat safe and manageable?

Yes. It is crowded, fast and cheap, and the orange flag line is the one to learn.
