Vancouver's best feature is a path. The seawall runs continuously for 28 kilometres around the downtown peninsula and out along the shore, separated from traffic, flat, and with the water on one side and the North Shore mountains across it. It goes around Stanley Park, along Coal Harbour, past English Bay, around False Creek and out to the university. It is the longest uninterrupted waterfront path in the world and it is the reason to be in this city rather than reading about it.
It is also the thing that decides where to stay, because a hotel on the seawall means you step out of the lobby and you are on it, and a hotel six blocks up means you cross downtown first and probably do it twice.
Why the peninsula geography matters
Downtown Vancouver sits on a peninsula with water on three sides. Coal Harbour on the north, facing the mountains and the seaplanes. English Bay on the west, facing the sunset. False Creek on the south, facing the converted industrial shore and Granville Island. Stanley Park, a thousand acres of rainforest, occupies the northern tip.
Everything is close. The peninsula is about three kilometres across. But being on the water rather than in the middle changes how much you use the water, which is the whole point of coming.

The North Shore hotels are excluded, and they put you at the foot of the mountains with the city across the water. Reaching the seawall from them means a bridge or a SeaBus, twice a day.
What to do
Rent a bike and do the Stanley Park seawall loop, which is ten kilometres, flat, one-way for cyclists, and takes about an hour with stops. It is the single best thing to do in Vancouver.
Take the tiny ferry across False Creek to Granville Island for the public market, then walk back along the southern seawall.
Go up. Grouse Mountain and the Capilano suspension bridge are twenty minutes across the bridge, and the Sea to Sky highway to Whistler is one of the great drives in North America.
Eat sushi and Chinese; Vancouver has the best of both in the western hemisphere. Go to Chinatown, Commercial Drive and Main Street for the neighbourhood cooking.
Practical notes
The airport connects on the Canada Line train to downtown in 25 minutes for a few dollars. It is one of the better airport links anywhere.
June to September is dry and the city is at its best. October to April is grey and rains persistently, and the ski season on the local mountains runs December to April, which is a genuine reason to come in winter.
Bring a rain shell. Bring layers; the temperature is mild but the damp is penetrating.

Is the seawall really the main attraction?
Yes. The mountains, the water and the path are the city. The downtown is pleasant and unremarkable by comparison.

Is Vancouver worth visiting in the rain?
The food and the mountains still work. But the seawall is the reason to come, so June to September is meaningfully better.
