The Maldives is sold as one place and is in fact about 1,200 islands with wildly different water. The photograph is always the same, a wooden villa over pale blue shallows, and the shallows are the problem. A great many resorts sit on a wide sand flat where the water is knee-deep for two hundred metres and there is nothing to look at under it. To reach coral you get on a boat.
Others sit on the edge of a reef that starts a few metres from the beach and drops into a wall of fish. Same country, same photograph, entirely different holiday. The term for the difference is the house reef, and it is the single most useful thing to check before booking here.

Several of the most celebrated resorts in the country are excluded. They are exceptional hotels with exceptional service, and they sit on wide sand flats where reaching living coral requires a boat.
What a good house reef actually means
Three things: proximity, access and health. Proximity is whether the reef starts near enough to swim to from the sand rather than from a boat. Access is whether there is a channel or a drop-off point you can enter without walking over coral, which damages it and cuts your feet. Health is whether the coral survived the bleaching events of recent years, which varied enormously between atolls.
A resort with all three gives you something no swimming pool anywhere replaces: you put on a mask before breakfast, swim for forty minutes, and see reef sharks, turtles and several hundred species without a guide, a boat or a booking.
The nine below all have a genuine house reef reachable from the beach. They are grouped by atoll, which matters mostly for how you get there.
North and South Male atolls, reachable by speedboat
The closest atolls to the airport, which means a 20 to 50 minute boat rather than a seaplane. That saves several hours and several hundred dollars each way, and it means you can arrive on a late flight.
Baros Maldives has one of the best house reefs in the country ringing a small island 25 minutes by speedboat from the airport, with the drop-off close enough to swim from the beach in either direction. It is an adults-focused island, small, and among the most consistently well run in the Maldives.

Kandolhu Maldives is a very small island with a house reef immediately offshore and only a few dozen villas, which produces the best ratio of reef to guests in the Maldives. It also happens to have unusually good food for its size.

North of Male, protected, and home to Hanifaru Bay where mantas gather in numbers between roughly May and November.
Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas has a house reef running the length of the island and an underwater restaurant that is a genuine curiosity rather than a gimmick. The overwater villas sit above the reef itself rather than over sand.
Vakkaru Maldives occupies a larger island with a good reef, a lagoon on the other side for non-swimmers, and the most complete facilities of the group. It suits families and mixed-ability groups.
Milaidhoo Island Maldives is a small, quiet island with a strong reef and a deliberately understated style, closer to a private club than a resort.
Laamu Atoll, far south
Six Senses Laamu sits in one of the least developed atolls, an hour's flight from Male, with a reef break offshore, genuine surf, and a sustainability programme that is not decorative. It is the most remote of the nine and the most interesting.
What to do besides swim
Dive if you are qualified, because the Maldives is among the best and easiest diving in the world, with channel dives that put you in current alongside grey reef sharks and eagle rays.
Snorkel the house reef at different times: early morning for reef sharks, dusk for the feeding. Ask the marine biologist most resorts now employ where the turtles actually are, because they know.
Go to Hanifaru Bay if you are in Baa Atoll in season, on a permitted boat, and accept that mantas do not appear on demand.
Take one trip to a local island. It costs almost nothing and it is the only way to see that the Maldives is a country rather than a set of resorts.
Practical notes
Everything routes through Male. Speedboat transfers run 20 to 50 minutes and operate at night. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, which means a late arrival can cost you a night in Male or an unplanned overnight, so check your flight times against your transfer type before booking.
January to April is the dry season and the peak. May to November is the wet season, cheaper by a lot, with rain in short bursts rather than all day, and it is also manta season in Baa.
Alcohol is only available on resort islands. Bring reef-safe sunscreen; several resorts now require it.

Is the house reef really that important?
It is the difference between swimming and looking at water. If you are going to the Maldives for the sea rather than the room, it is the first thing to check and the last thing most people do.
Speedboat or seaplane?
Speedboat wherever possible: cheaper, faster, operates at night. The seaplane is a spectacular flight and a logistical constraint.
Overwater villa or beach villa?
Beach villa for swimming and privacy and shade. Overwater for the photograph and the ladder. Over a good reef, the overwater villa wins; over sand flats, it does not.
How many nights?
Seven. Five if the transfers are short. Anything less and you spend a disproportionate share of the trip in transit.
