Cape Byron is the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, and the lighthouse on it is the first place on the continent to see the sunrise. The town below it has around 10,000 residents and receives something in the region of two million visitors a year, which is the tension that defines the place.
Byron has spent two decades moving from surf town to something else, and the accommodation has moved with it. What it has not done is get any bigger. Development is tightly controlled, there are no towers, and the hotel inventory is small relative to the demand.
Beach, hinterland or the Gold Coast
Three options and they are genuinely different holidays.
Byron itself is the beaches, the lighthouse walk, the restaurants and the crowds. Wategos and Little Wategos below the cape are the good swimming; Main Beach is the busy one; Tallow Beach south is long and empty.
The hinterland, fifteen to thirty minutes inland, is subtropical rainforest, the villages of Bangalow and Federal, and the extinct volcano caldera around Mount Warning. It is where the wellness retreats are and where the town's food actually comes from.
The Gold Coast, 45 minutes to an hour north across the Queensland border, is the opposite proposition: high-rise, surf beaches, theme parks and the region's biggest hotels. It has the airport most visitors use.
The eleven below are grouped that way.

What we have left off
The holiday houses across Byron and the hinterland are excluded, and in a town with a small hotel inventory and enormous demand they are how most visitors stay. They are houses rather than hotels.
What to do
Walk to the lighthouse at dawn from the town, about an hour up and over the cape, and stand on the easternmost point of Australia as the sun comes up. It is free and it is the best thing here.
Swim at Wategos, which is sheltered and the calmest beach on the cape. Learn to surf at Main Beach, which is where everyone else does.
Whales pass on their migration between roughly June and November and are visible from the cape.
Go inland to Bangalow for the Saturday market and to the Crystal Castle and the rainforest walks around Minyon Falls.
Eat well. Byron and the hinterland have a genuine food culture built on local growers, and the good restaurants book weeks ahead in summer.
Practical notes
Gold Coast airport at Coolangatta is 45 minutes north of Byron and is the practical arrival point. Ballina is 30 minutes south with fewer connections. Brisbane is two hours.
The seasons are inverted. December to February is summer, hot, humid and extremely busy, with the town at capacity over Christmas and New Year. March to May is warm, quieter and the best window. Winter is mild and it is whale season.
A car is useful for the hinterland and unnecessary in the town.
