10 Kuala Lumpur Hotels Where the Petronas Towers Fill the Window

The Petronas Towers are 452 metres of stainless steel and glass with an Islamic geometric floor plan, and at night they are lit in a way that makes them the single best-looking thing in Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur's hotels know it. A great many of them advertise a Twin Towers view, and the phrase covers everything from a full frontal framing to a sliver of one tower visible past an air-conditioning plant.

The difference comes down to three things, and none of them are price.

What actually produces the view

Distance. Too close and the towers are foreshortened into an unreadable wall of steel; you cannot see the shape from directly beneath. The best framing is from about half a kilometre to two kilometres out, which puts you in the KLCC fringe, along Jalan Sultan Ismail, or up in Bukit Bintang.

Elevation. KL is dense with towers and low floors see other buildings. Above roughly the twentieth floor the sightlines open considerably.

Orientation. The towers face a specific way from any given hotel, and half the rooms in most buildings face the other way. This is the one to ask about explicitly, because booking engines rarely distinguish.

There is also the pool question. KL sits three degrees off the equator and the infinity pools facing the towers are a genuine feature rather than a marketing line.

Inside KLCC

The park at the foot of the towers and the streets around it. Closest, most convenient, and where the framing is most variable.

Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur sits inside KLCC Park itself, which means the towers rise directly from the garden outside and the infinity pool faces them across the water. Nothing else is this close with this view. Ask for a Twin Towers room and confirm it.

Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur occupies a tower on the park's edge with the largest rooms in the city, a serious spa and a good number of tower-facing rooms on the upper floors.

Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur sits beside the convention centre with an outdoor pool and direct covered access to the mall beneath the towers, which matters more than it sounds in an equatorial downpour.

Jalan Sultan Ismail and the Golden Triangle

Half a kilometre out, where the towers read properly as two towers with the skybridge between them.

Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur has the rooftop bar that made the view famous, on the 33rd floor with the towers framed dead centre, and rooms below it with the same sightline. Book a tower-facing room; the others look the wrong way entirely.

W Kuala Lumpur occupies a tower on Jalan Sultan Ismail with a rooftop pool, a strong restaurant and one of the better hotel bars in the city.

Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur sits nearby with an urban resort layout, a large garden pool and considerably more space than the newer towers manage.

The RuMa Hotel and Residences occupies a slim tower with an infinity pool on the upper deck and the most design-led interior in Kuala Lumpur.

Bukit Bintang and the southern side

Further out, higher, and where the towers sit within the wider skyline rather than filling the window.

EQ Kuala Lumpur occupies the top of a tower above the shopping district with a rooftop pool that looks across the whole city to the towers. It has the most contemporary rooms in the city.

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur sits in a garden compound with an outdoor pool, a spa and the calmest grounds of any hotel here. It is the pick if the view matters less than the quiet.

The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur occupies a tower at KL Sentral with direct access to the airport train, which makes it the easiest arrival in the country, and tower views from the higher floors.

What we have left off

The Bangsar and Damansara hotels are excluded. They sit among the best neighbourhood restaurants in the city and are popular with residents, and they are twenty to thirty minutes from KLCC in traffic with no view at all.

What to do

Go up the towers or up the KL Tower. The KL Tower is the better choice for one specific reason: from it you can see the Petronas Towers, and from the Petronas Towers you cannot.

Eat at the hawker centres and the mamak stalls. Jalan Alor after dark, the Chinatown stalls around Petaling Street, and the Malay, Chinese and Indian food traditions running in parallel is the actual reason to come to this city.

The Batu Caves are 30 minutes north, up 272 coloured steps, and worth the early start. The Islamic Arts Museum is the best museum in the country and is nearly always empty.

For a day out, the Genting highlands are an hour and the Melaka colonial port is two.

Practical notes

KLIA connects on the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral in 28 minutes, which is far better than the road.

It is hot and humid all year with an afternoon downpour most days. There is no bad season, though November to February is the wettest.

Ramadan changes hours and adds the best food markets of the year. Grab is standard and cheap. KL is very affordable relative to Singapore or Bangkok, and the luxury hotels here are among the best value in Asia.

Is a Twin Towers room worth the supplement?

Yes, and it is usually small. But confirm orientation and floor with the hotel directly, because the room categories often do not distinguish.

KLCC or Bukit Bintang?

KLCC for the park, the towers and the mall. Bukit Bintang for the street food and the nightlife, with the towers still in view from higher floors.

Is Kuala Lumpur worth more than a stopover?

Two or three nights. It is not as immediately striking as Bangkok or Singapore and the food is arguably better than both.
