The aurora is a waiting game. On a good night it appears for a few minutes at a time over several hours, usually between about nine in the evening and two in the morning, and the intervals in between are spent outside in temperatures that regularly sit below minus 20.
Most aurora trips solve this with snowsuits, thermoses and patience. Finnish Lapland solved it with a glass roof.
The glass igloo, and what it actually is
The thermal glass dome or cabin, angled at the northern sky and heated so it does not frost over, was developed here and it is now the region's signature product. You lie in bed, warm, and watch. If nothing happens, you sleep. If something does, you are already looking at it.
The honest caveats are worth stating. The aurora is not guaranteed on any night — it depends on solar activity and cloud, and a week in Lapland gives you a good chance rather than a certainty. The domes vary enormously in quality, from genuinely excellent to a cabin with a skylight. And light pollution matters, so a dome on the edge of a resort's car park is not the same as one in the wilderness.
How far north to go
Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle, has the airport with the most flights, the Santa Claus Village and the shortest transfers. It is the easiest and the least dark.
Levi and Ylläs, two to three hours north, are ski resorts with restaurants and lifts as well as aurora cabins.
Saariselkä and Ivalo, four hours north or a separate flight, are further into the Arctic, with fewer people, darker skies and better statistical odds.
The polar night — when the sun does not clear the horizon at all — runs for roughly a month around midwinter in the far north. It is not pitch dark; it is a long blue twilight, and it is remarkable.

The tented and snow accommodation across Lapland is excluded, along with the self-catering cabins that make up much of the region's supply. Snow hotels are worth visiting and they are not places this guide recommends sleeping.
What to do
Watch the forecast rather than the clock. Aurora activity is forecast a day or two ahead on a scale from zero upward, and cloud cover matters as much as solar activity.
Do a husky sled run and a reindeer sled, which are different: huskies are fast and loud, reindeer are slow and silent.
Take a snowmobile out onto a frozen lake, and go ice fishing if the season allows.
Sauna properly, which in Finland means very hot, then into snow or a hole cut in the ice, then back. It is the national institution and it is not optional.
In Rovaniemi, the Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle and is either delightful with children or entirely skippable without them. The Arktikum museum is genuinely good.
Practical notes
Rovaniemi, Kittilä for Levi, and Ivalo for Saariselkä all have flights, mostly through Helsinki with some direct seasonal European services.
The aurora season runs roughly late August to early April, with the darkest and coldest months from December to February. December has the polar night and the Christmas market; March offers longer days, more snow and often better viewing conditions.
Proper Arctic clothing is essential and most properties lend it. Temperatures below minus 25 are normal.

Questions people actually ask
Will you definitely see the aurora?
No. A week in the far north in season gives good odds, not a guarantee. Cloud is as much of a factor as solar activity.
Are glass igloos worth it?
For aurora viewing, considerably. Quality varies enormously; check whether the glass is heated and how far the property is from artificial light.
How far north should you go?
Saariselkä and Ivalo for the darkest skies. Rovaniemi for the easiest access and shortest transfers.
How many nights?
Four. Three gives you three chances at the sky, which is the minimum worth flying for.
