$$ to $$$$ — roughly $250-1,200 a night, peaking at Christmas and spring break

Staying inside a theme park resort buys you things that money cannot buy from outside it. Early entry to the parks before general opening, extended evening hours at some of them, complimentary transport that runs from your lobby, and at Universal specifically, express access to most ride queues bundled into the room rate at three of its hotels.

Those are structural advantages. An off-site hotel two minutes down the road cannot purchase them at any price, and on a four-day park trip the early entry alone is worth more than the nightly difference for most families.

That is the whole booking question in Orlando, and everything else follows from it.

The three clusters

Walt Disney World is not in Orlando. It is a 100-square-kilometre property in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, about the size of San Francisco, with four theme parks, two water parks and its own transport network of monorail, boat, bus and gondola. On-site hotels are graded by that transport: monorail and boat access to the Magic Kingdom is the premium, Skyliner gondola serves others, and the rest run on buses.

Universal Orlando is compact by comparison, a walkable resort of three parks with hotels you can reach on foot or by water taxi. Three of its hotels include unlimited express queue access for every guest, which is the single biggest time saving available anywhere in Orlando.

Grande Lakes and the convention corridor, south along International Drive, hold the large independent resorts with golf and spas. No park perks, considerably more space, and a short drive to everything.

Winter Park, north of the city, is the actual town: brick streets, a chain of lakes, a Tiffany glass museum and no theme parks at all. It is where people stay when the parks are not the point.

The thirteen below are grouped that way.

What we have left off

The vacation home rentals around Kissimmee and Davenport are excluded, and for larger families they are frequently the better economics: a private pool house for the price of two hotel rooms. They are houses rather than hotels.

What to do

Decide whether the parks are the trip. If they are, book on-site and use the early entry every morning — the first hour is worth two later in the day.

Book park reservations and any paid queue systems as far ahead as you can. Systems change names and rules regularly, so check what is current rather than what was true last year.

Go in the shoulder weeks. Late January, early February, and the first weeks of May and September have shorter queues and lower rates.

Leave the parks for a day. Winter Park's Scenic Boat Tour runs through canals between the lakes, and the Morse Museum there holds the largest collection of Tiffany glass in the world, including his rebuilt chapel interior.

See a rocket if the schedule allows. Kennedy Space Center is about an hour east and launches are frequent.

Practical notes

Orlando International is the main airport, twenty to thirty minutes from most resorts, with a rail link to the south. Sanford is smaller and further out.

The parks are busiest at Christmas, spring break and mid-summer. Summer is hot, humid and brings daily afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Distances on Disney property are larger than they look. Allow an hour between hotel and park gate on bus routes.

Questions people actually ask

Is staying on-site worth it?

For a park-focused trip, yes. Early entry and included express access at Universal are not purchasable from outside.

Disney or Universal?

Disney for scale, younger children and the transport network. Universal for walkability, older children and the express queue access.

When is quietest?

Late January, early February, early May and the first half of September.

How many nights?

Six. Four park days and two for recovery or Winter Park.
