8 Sabi Sand Lodges With the Traversing Rights That Matter

The Sabi Sand is a private reserve on the western boundary of Kruger National Park with no fence between the two, which means the animals move freely across roughly two million hectares. It is the best place in Africa to see leopard, and the reason is that the leopards here have been habituated to vehicles over decades and behave as though they are not being watched.

What separates one lodge from another is not the rooms. It is traversing rights: the number of hectares a lodge's vehicles are permitted to drive across. Some lodges have exclusive access to ten thousand hectares. Others share a few thousand with several neighbours. That number, more than anything printed in a brochure, determines what you see.

Why traversing decides the sightings

A leopard on a kill is stationary for a day or two. A pack of wild dogs covers thirty kilometres before breakfast. With generous traversing your ranger can follow a sighting across the landscape, respond to a radio call from the far side of the area, and rotate away from a crowded sighting to something else.

With restricted traversing, the vehicle reaches a boundary and stops. The animal walks on and you turn around.

The second variable is vehicle density. Private reserves cap the number of vehicles at a sighting, usually at two or three, and rotate. That cap is why a private reserve costs several times what a self-drive in the national park costs, and it is the difference between watching a leopard and queueing behind eleven cars to photograph one.

Kruger Park Lodge sits on a large private concession in the western Sabi Sand with sightings that are consistently the best in the reserve, an exceptional wine cellar and rooms open to the riverbed. It is the benchmark for African safari.

Londolozi Tree Camp occupies a family concession that has been in the same hands since 1926 and effectively invented the modern photographic safari. The tracking is the finest in the reserve and the rangers are extraordinary.

Kruger Park Lodge sits on a large traversing area in the southern Sabi Sand, with a lodge built into an earth berm so that it disappears into the landscape. It is the most architecturally interesting camp here.

Lion Sands Ivory Lodge occupies a stretch of the Sabie river frontage with treehouse sleep-outs above the water and a large traversing area. The river frontage means predictable game movement.

Mid-sized traversing, strong value

Cheetah Plains Private Game Reserve sits on a private area with all-electric game vehicles, which are silent and change the experience of approaching animals considerably. The camp is contemporary and the suites are the largest in the reserve.

Kruger Park Lodge occupies a hilltop position with views over the reserve, a private traversing area and one of the more comfortable camps in the Sabi Sand.

Kruger Park Lodge sits on a smaller family-run concession with a strong reputation for guiding and a fraction of the rates of the largest names. It is the value pick here.

Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve occupies a ridge with lodges overlooking a dam, a good traversing area and a longer-established operation than most.

Inside Kruger itself

Kruger Park Lodge sits on a private concession within the national park on the eastern boundary, with a modern glass-and-steel camp above the N'wanetsi river and exclusive traversing across a very large area. It is a different landscape from the Sabi Sand: more open, more dramatic, with different game.

What we have left off

The rest camps inside Kruger National Park are excluded, and they are a fraction of the price and a legitimate way to see the park. They are self-catering accommodation with self-drive game viewing, no off-road driving permitted and no vehicle caps at sightings, which is a different holiday from anything on this list.

What to know before booking

Rates at these lodges are almost always fully inclusive: accommodation, all meals, two game drives a day, a bush walk, and usually drinks. Compare on that basis rather than on the nightly figure.

Two nights is the minimum and three is right. Game viewing is a probability exercise and a single night gives you two drives.

Drives run at dawn and late afternoon, which is when the animals move. The middle of the day is for sleeping.

Children have minimum age limits at many lodges, frequently six or twelve for shared drives. Check before booking.

Practical notes

Most guests fly into Johannesburg then take a short flight to Skukuza or the reserve's own airstrips. A road transfer from Johannesburg is around six hours.

May to September is the dry winter and the best game viewing: sparse vegetation, animals concentrated at water, and no malaria risk to speak of. Mornings are cold, sometimes near freezing on a drive.

October to April is the green season: lush, dramatic skies, newborn animals, lower rates, and harder viewing.

Bring layers, neutral colours and a proper camera. The lodges supply everything else.
