6 Telluride Hotels at Either End of the Free Gondola

Telluride sits at the closed end of a box canyon. Sheer walls on three sides, one road in, and that road dead-ends in the town — there is no through traffic because there is nowhere for it to go. The mountains that trap it rise over a thousand metres above the valley floor, and Bridal Veil Falls, the tallest free-falling waterfall in Colorado, drops off the headwall at the end of Main Street.

The town grew on silver and gold from the 1870s, went bust, and was nearly abandoned before skiing arrived in 1972. The Victorian street survived the way Cornish and Cotswold villages did, because nobody could afford to replace it.

The gondola, which is free and is public transport

Telluride's other unusual feature is the way it connects to its own ski resort. Mountain Village, the purpose-built base at 2,900 metres, sits on the other side of a ridge from the historic town. Rather than build a road, the two were linked in 1996 by a gondola — free to use, open to everyone, running from early morning until midnight, and legally part of the public transit system.

It is the only free public gondola transit in the United States. It carries commuters, school students, skis, dogs and shopping, the ride takes about thirteen minutes, and the views from the midway station are the best in the valley.

That changes the booking question. You are not choosing between being near the lifts and being near the restaurants — you are choosing which end of a thirteen-minute ride you prefer, with the other end permanently available.

The historic town at 2,660 metres has the Victorian street, the bars, the restaurants and the festivals.

Mountain Village has the ski-in ski-out hotels, the golf course and the space.

Mountain Village

At 2,900 metres, ski-in and gondola-connected.

Madeline Hotel & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection occupies a position directly on the slopes with a heated outdoor pool, a spa, several restaurants and ski valet to the lifts. It is the most complete hotel in the valley.

Lumière with Inspirato sits at the gondola station in Mountain Village with suites, a rooftop terrace and the shortest walk to both the lift and the ride into town.

The Peaks Resort & Spa occupies a large slope-side property with two pools, a spa and full family facilities.

Fairmont Heritage Place, Franz Klammer Lodge sits in Mountain Village with residence-style rooms, a pool and space that suits longer stays.

The historic town

New Sheridan Hotel occupies a building on Main Street opened in 1895, with a restored bar, an opera house next door and the gondola station three minutes away.

Hotel Telluride sits at the eastern end of town with a spa, a pool and the Bridal Veil headwall filling the window.

What we have left off

The condominium rentals across Mountain Village are excluded, and in Telluride they are how most families and groups stay for a week. They are apartments rather than hotels.

What to do

Ride the gondola at night, when the cabins run until midnight and the valley is lit below. It costs nothing and it is the best free thing in Colorado.

Walk or drive to Bridal Veil Falls at the end of the box canyon, where a restored hydroelectric plant sits on the lip of the drop.

Ski the terrain above town, which is steeper and quieter than the destination resorts on the Front Range, and take the free Revelation Bowl lift for the views.

Come for a festival. Telluride runs bluegrass in June, film over Labor Day and a long list in between, and the town completely changes character for each.

Hike the Jud Wiebe or Bear Creek trails from the town itself in summer, when the valley floor is wildflower meadow.

Practical notes

Telluride has a small regional airport, the highest commercial airport in the United States, with weather-dependent service. Montrose is ninety minutes away and more reliable; Denver is a six to seven hour drive.

The ski season runs late November to early April. Summer runs June to September with the festivals. April, May, October and November are the quiet shoulder months when much of the town closes.

The town sits at 2,660 metres and Mountain Village higher. Take the first day gently and drink more water than feels necessary.
