Kalakaua Avenue runs the length of Waikiki two blocks back from the water, and it is the line that separates the hotels that are on the beach from the hotels that are near it. Both call themselves Waikiki beachfront. The distinction is that one set has a lawn, a pool deck and then sand, and the other has a crossing signal.
Waikiki is also a much smaller beach than it appears in photographs. It is about two miles long, largely man-made, and the good stretches are specific: Gray's Beach, Royal Hawaiian Beach and Kuhio Beach in the middle, Sans Souci at the Diamond Head end. Where a hotel sits along that line matters as much as which side of the road it is on.
Why so few hotels are actually on the sand
Land. Waikiki was developed early and densely, and the beachfront parcels were taken by the 1960s. Everything since has been built inland, which is why the tower boom of the last thirty years produced dozens of large hotels a block or two back. Some of them are excellent. None of them are on the beach.
The practical difference in Hawaii is the same one that applies in Rio and Miami: frequency. Being on the sand means swimming before breakfast, again at eleven, and again at five, because there is nothing between you and the water. Being across Kalakaua means going to the beach, which is a decision rather than a habit.
There are eight hotels genuinely on the sand in and around Waikiki. That is the whole list, and it is short for a reason.
The middle of the beach
The best stretch, between the Royal Hawaiian groin and the Halekulani, with the calmest water and the beginner surf breaks offshore.

The large towers on the mountain side of Kalakaua have been excluded even where they are better hotels with better rooms and lower prices. Several have superb ocean views from high floors. What they do not have is sand at the door, which is the promise of this article. If a view is enough for you, they are often the smarter booking.
What to do beyond the beach
Get out of Waikiki on at least two days. The windward side, the North Shore in winter for the surf, and Hanauma Bay for snorkelling with a pre-booked reservation.
Hike Diamond Head early with a reservation, or better, do the Makapuu lighthouse trail or Manoa Falls instead. Pearl Harbor needs a booked timed ticket and half a day.
Learn to surf at Waikiki, which is where the whole thing started and where the waves are slow, long and forgiving. Take an outrigger canoe out once.
Eat outside the resorts. Kaimuki and Chinatown have the best food in Honolulu, and a plate lunch or poke from a supermarket counter is genuinely better than most restaurant versions.
Practical notes
Honolulu airport is 20 minutes from Waikiki. Skip the rental car for a Waikiki-only trip and hire one for the days you leave the strip; parking runs 40 to 60 dollars a night at these hotels.
The weather is good year round. April, May, September and October are the best value. Winter has bigger surf on the north shore and more rain. Whale season runs roughly December to April.
Resort fees are near universal and substantial. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by law.

Is beachfront worth the premium in Waikiki?
Yes, because the beach is the reason you came and the crossing is what stops people using it. If the budget will not stretch, book a smaller room on the sand rather than a suite across the road.
Is Waikiki too touristy?
It is very built up and it is also a genuinely good beach with warm calm water and beginner surf. Treat it as a base and leave it regularly.
Which end is best?
The middle for the beach and the swimming, the Diamond Head end for quiet, the Ala Moana end for families and shopping.
How many nights?
Five on Oahu, or three here and four on another island, which is the better shape for a first trip to Hawaii.
