The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, built around 350 BC for a Persian satrap named Mausolus, whose name is where the word mausoleum comes from. It stood for roughly sixteen centuries until earthquakes brought it down, and the Knights of St John then quarried the stone to build Bodrum Castle, which still stands on the harbour.
So the wonder is gone and the castle it became is the town's landmark. That is a fair summary of the Turkish Aegean: layers of Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman on a coast that is now mostly about boats.
The peninsula, not the town
Bodrum town has the castle, the marina and the bar street. The resorts are almost all somewhere else, spread around a peninsula that runs about 30 kilometres west with a bay every few kilometres, and each bay is a different proposition.
Yalıkavak, on the northwest, has the largest superyacht marina in the region and the highest concentration of expensive properties.
Türkbükü and Göltürkbükü, on the north coast, are where Istanbul goes in August: wooden decks over the water instead of beaches, and a scene.
Torba and Gündoğan, also north, are quieter and more family-oriented.
Bitez and Ortakent, south of the town, are calmer and closer to the airport.
Kaplankaya, an hour north around the gulf, is a separate development on an empty stretch of coast.
One thing to understand: the Aegean coast here is mostly rock and pebble rather than sand. Most resorts have platforms, jetties and imported sand rather than a natural beach, and the swimming is off a deck. It is very good swimming; it is not a sand holiday.

An hour north, on an empty coast.
Six Senses Kaplankaya occupies a 400-hectare estate on a headland above the Aegean with a very large wellness centre, several beaches and almost nothing else within sight. It is the most secluded property on this coast.
What we have left off
The gulet charters are excluded, and along this coast a wooden boat with a crew for a week — the blue cruise — is one of the great Mediterranean holidays. They are vessels rather than hotels.
What to do
Get on a boat, even for a day. The coast between Bodrum and Gökova is a series of bays reachable only by sea, and the gulet day trips are inexpensive.
See Bodrum Castle and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology inside it, which holds the Uluburun wreck, a Bronze Age trading ship from around 1300 BC and one of the most important underwater finds ever made.
Drive to Ephesus, about two and a half hours north, which is the best preserved classical city in the Mediterranean.
Eat properly. The Aegean coast's cooking is olive oil, herbs, fish and meze, and it is closer to Greek than to central Anatolian food.
Swim off a deck at Türkbükü in the evening, which is the local ritual.
Practical notes
Bodrum's airport is about 35 minutes from the town and up to an hour from the far peninsula bays, with heavy European charter traffic in summer.
May, June, September and October are ideal. July and August are hot and the north coast is at capacity with Turkish holidaymakers. Most of the peninsula closes from November to April.

Questions people actually ask
Are there sandy beaches?
Mostly not. The coast is rock and pebble and the swimming is off decks, jetties and platforms. It is excellent swimming of a different kind.
Which bay?
Yalıkavak for marinas and scene, Türkbükü for the Istanbul crowd, Torba and Bitez for quiet, Kaplankaya for isolation.
Is the town worth staying in?
For the castle and the bar street, briefly. The resorts are on the peninsula and that is where the swimming is.
How many nights?
