Cyprus sits further east and further south than any other significant Mediterranean island — closer to Beirut than to Athens — and the sea around it stays swimmable considerably longer than the rest of the region. The water reaches its warmest in August and September and is still comfortable well into November, and it is usually back by late April.
That gives roughly seven months of beach season, which is longer than Greece, Italy, Spain or Turkey can offer. It is the practical reason the island supports the resort inventory it does.
A note on geography: Cyprus has been divided since 1974, and this article covers hotels in the Republic of Cyprus in the south, which is where essentially all of the four and five star resort inventory sits.
The three coasts
Limassol, on the south coast, is the largest resort city and the island's business centre: a long beachfront strip, a restored old port, a marina and the best restaurants. It is the most urban option.
Paphos, in the southwest, is quieter and older, with the Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings and a coastline of small bays. The Akamas peninsula north of it is undeveloped.
Ayia Napa and Protaras, in the far southeast, have the best sand on the island — Nissi Beach and Fig Tree Bay — along with a summer nightlife reputation that is entirely earned in Ayia Napa and entirely absent in Protaras.
Inland, the Troodos mountains rise to nearly 2,000 metres, hold painted Byzantine churches and get enough snow for a short ski season.

The apartment and self-catering complexes across Paphos and Protaras are excluded, and they are a very large share of the island's beds, particularly in the British and northern European market. They are apartments rather than hotels.
What to do
Swim in October. It is the single best argument for Cyprus over the rest of the Mediterranean, and the sea is often warmer then than in June.
See the Paphos mosaics, which are Roman floors in situ under cover and among the best preserved anywhere, and the Tombs of the Kings cut into the rock beside the sea.
Drive into the Troodos for the painted churches, ten of which are UNESCO-listed, and for the temperature drop.
Walk part of the Akamas peninsula, which is the undeveloped western tip, and swim at the Blue Lagoon by boat from Latchi.
Eat meze properly. A Cypriot meze is fifteen to twenty dishes and it is a three-hour commitment, which is the point.
Practical notes
Larnaca and Paphos both have airports with heavy European traffic. Larnaca is 45 minutes from Limassol and about an hour and a quarter from Paphos.
April to November is the season, with July and August very hot and busy. May, June, September and October are the best months. Winter is mild on the coast and cold in the mountains.
A hire car is useful; the motorway network is good and the island is small.
