Yosemite Valley is eleven kilometres long and about a kilometre and a half wide, with walls of granite rising 900 metres on either side. Around four million people visit the park each year and almost all of them come into that valley.
The National Park Service controls every bed inside it. There is no mechanism by which a developer can build a hotel in Yosemite Valley, and the lodging that exists dates from an era when the standard was different. Most of it is three-star by any modern measure: functional cabins and motel-style rooms in an extraordinary place.
What that leaves you
One hotel inside the valley clears the bar. It is a 1927 building of granite and timber that was designed to persuade wealthy visitors that the park deserved federal protection, and it worked.
Everything else at this standard is outside the gates, and the gates are not close. Yosemite has four entrances on different sides of a park the size of Rhode Island, and the drive from the western entrances into the valley is an hour of switchbacks. From the southern entrance it is similar.
So the decision is: pay for the one room inside, or take a considerably better room an hour out and drive in early.

Inside the valley
The Oakhurst Inn at Yosemite sits on the valley floor beneath the Royal Arches with granite walls, a dining room of extraordinary scale and windows facing Half Dome and Yosemite Falls. It has been operating since 1927 and staying in it is the closest thing to living in the park. Rooms are dated for the money and the setting is not replicable. Book the cottages if the main building is full.

Rush Creek Lodge at Yosemite occupies a site just outside the entrance with a pool, a spa, an adventure centre and rooms and cabins spread through the pines. It is family-focused, genuinely well run, and considerably more comfortable than anything inside the park.

The rest of the in-park lodging is excluded: the valley lodge, the historic hotel at Wawona, the tented camps at Curry Village and the housekeeping units. Between them they hold most of the beds in the park and they are three-star and below, or tents, which this guide does not cover.
The glamping site outside the Big Oak Flat entrance is excluded on the same basis.
What to do
Book everything. Yosemite has operated a peak-season reservation system for entering the park in recent years, and the arrangements change from year to year. Check the current requirement before you travel and do not assume you can drive up to the gate.
Get into the valley before eight. Parking fills, the shuttle queues build, and the difference between seven and eleven in the morning at Tunnel View is enormous.
Walk to Vernal Fall on the Mist Trail in spring when the water is high, and do the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias at the southern end.
Drive Glacier Point for the view down onto Half Dome, and the Tioga Road over the pass in summer, which climbs to 3,000 metres and is closed by snow for much of the year.
Waterfalls peak in May and June from snowmelt and several dry up entirely by August, which surprises people who come in high summer.
Practical notes
San Francisco is four hours to the valley, Fresno two and Sacramento three and a half. Tioga Road across the park is seasonal and often closed until late May or June.
Late spring for the waterfalls, September and October for clear air and thin crowds. July and August are the busiest. Winter is quiet and beautiful, with chains required on the roads.
Mobile signal in the valley is poor to non-existent and that is unlikely to change.

Questions people actually ask
Is staying inside the park worth it?
For one hotel, yes, because being in the valley at dawn and dusk is the reason to come. For the rest of the in-park lodging, you are paying a premium for a three-star room.
How far are the gateway hotels?
Forty-five minutes to an hour from the valley floor, on mountain roads. That is an early alarm each morning.
Do you need a reservation to enter?
In recent peak seasons, yes, and the system has changed repeatedly. Check the current rules before travelling.
How many nights?
Three. Two inside the park is enough for the valley, and a third gets you the sequoias or Glacier Point.
